Manufacturing and Agriculture are the two largest sectors (gross sales) in the local economy. Companies which have located in the City of Kawartha Lakes identified the cost of land, availability of labour and access to markets as being important factors in their choice of location.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing opportunities are leading economic growth in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Manufacturing has estimated gross sales of $340 million. There are approximately 125 manufacturers within the City of which over 25% are actively involved in exporting to markets around the Globe. The industrial base is diverse and includes growing numbers of "niche" market manufacturers.

Agriculture

Agriculture is a major contributor to the City's economy. Beef cattle and dairy farming predominate with mixed livestock farming as a close third. Hay is the largest single crop.

Tourism

The Tourism industry is a significant component of the City's economy and, in 2007, tourism contributed close to $100 million to the local economy. There is potential for growth in this sector, particularly in the following areas:

In Retail/Commerce there are over 2500 businesses throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes. From the large department stores to the small rural general store, you would be hard pressed not to find whatever product or service you were looking for. The average annual spending on merchandise is approximately $600 million.
