Agriculture Fast Facts

Sales of farm products in Kawartha Lakes continue to increase according to the 2016 Census of Agriculture. In 2015, sales reached more than $149.5 million, up from $110 million in 2010. This represents a 40% increase in sales receipts. However, also increasing was the capitalization of farms in Kawartha Lakes. There were 489 farms with over one million dollars of capitalization, which is up by 186 farms from 2011.

There are 1,265 farms in Kawartha Lakes with 168,272 acres in crop production and 25,225 acres in pasture, according to the 2016 Census. This represents a 3.5% increase in the land in crop production as well as a 23% drop in the acres used for pasture since 2011.

Kawartha Lakes farms are still primarily family businesses. Fully 89.9% are either sole proprietorships or partnerships, and only 1.3% of farms are non-family corporations. Most notably, the number of family corporations has almost doubled with 8.7% of businesses now held by family corporations and is up from 4.9% in 2011.

There are an estimated 8,387 people in the area are employed year-round and 4,013 seasonally in the agri-food and related industries.

Kawartha Lakes agriculture sector also features:

  • two independent family owned dairy processing business, including: Kawartha Dairy Limited (cow milk and cow milk ice cream) and Mariposa Dairy Limited (goat milk fresh cheeses and artisanal hard goat and sheep milk cheeses)

  • regional center for farm marketing with a livestock sale barn and large commercial grain elevators

  • regional center for farm supply with all major farm machinery dealers present, dairy supply company, etc...

  • pursuing diverse and value added agricultural opportunities

  • biggest community pasture in Ontario
