Age-Friendly Business

Through funding from Ontario's Senior Secretariat; the City of Kawartha Lakes is developing a strategy to help local business increase their age-friendliness. The Age-Friendly Business initiative will benefit our local businesses, older adult residents and our community at large.

What is an Age-friendly Business?

An Age-friendly business is a business that has made no cost or low cost changes to accommodate older customers.

Some examples of these accommodations are: wide and clutter free aisles, large print signs, accessible washrooms, respectful staff, good lighting, etc.

Why should you make your business more Age-friendly?

According to Statistics Canada, in 2011, the percentage of the population aged 65 and over in the City of Kawartha Lakes, was 21.9%, compared with a national percentage of 14.8%. This represents an increase of percentage from 2006, and it is a trend that is predicted to continue.

If a business is welcoming and comfortable for older adults it will also be more comfortable for all customers, including parents with children in strollers, expectant mothers, people with injuries, disabilities, or other limitations (i.e. sight, hearing, mobility).

Older adults tend to be loyal customers and this vibrant group not only has a lot of purchasing power but also the time to shop.
